Which is better, aluminium or uPVC?

For most trade specifications, aluminium. It carries more glass on a slimmer frame, spans larger openings, and lasts longer in service. uPVC holds an advantage on upfront cost and on entry-level thermal figures, which is why it still suits budget-led domestic work.

The honest answer is project-led. Where the brief calls for big glazed areas, narrow sightlines, structural spans or a long maintenance-free life, aluminium earns its premium. Where the only driver is lowest initial price on a standard-size opening, uPVC can be the pragmatic call. The exact spec varies by system and is quote-confirmed.

How do they compare on verified standard?

What about sightlines and glass area?

Aluminium is stronger than uPVC, so frames are thinner for the same opening. That means more daylight and a cleaner line, which is why architects specify it for big glazed elevations.

Lifespan, maintenance and finish

Aluminium lasts. A powder-coated aluminium frame holds colour and shape for decades with minimal upkeep, and it will not warp, yellow or sag the way uPVC can over a long service life.

Finish options are wider too: any RAL colour, matt or gloss, dual-colour inside and out, and consistent colour across windows, doors and curtain walling on the same project. uPVC colour choice is narrower and foiled finishes can fade or peel over time.

Cost: where uPVC wins and where it does not

uPVC is cheaper to buy. On a standard-size, standard-spec window it will undercut aluminium, and for tight-budget domestic work that can decide it.

Aluminium closes the gap over the life of the building through durability, lower replacement frequency and stronger resale on the finished work. On large openings, slim-sightline glazing and commercial spec, aluminium is often the only route that meets the brief, so the comparison stops being about price.

Which should you specify?
