Comparison

Casement vs tilt and turn windows

Choose casement for the widest choice of opening style and the heaviest leaf; choose tilt and turn where you need a wide single pane, inward cleaning access, or a secure vent position. Both are fabricated in aluminium, both start at a whole-unit Uw of 1.2 W/m²K and both carry PAS 24 product routes, so this is not a thermal or a security decision. It is a decision about leaf geometry and how the window is used. VitrineAlu is a trade aluminium fabricator in the North West; get the route confirmed on your quote.

Different leaf limitsTilt and turn takes a wider leaf at 1725mm; casement carries a heavier one at 180kg.

Casement or tilt and turn: which should you choose?

Pick tilt and turn when the opening wants one wide pane rather than a run of narrower ones. Its leaf goes to 1725mm against the casement’s 1370mm, so a single vent covers an opening that would otherwise need a mullion and two leaves.

Pick casement when the leaf is heavy or tall. It carries up to 180kg against the tilt and turn’s 130kg, goes to 2400mm high against 2300mm, and takes a thicker glazing unit at 24 to 40mm against 24 to 35mm, which matters where an acoustic or triple build-up is specified.

See the aluminium casement windows and aluminium tilt and turn windows for the full published figures.

Where the two are the same, and why that matters

Both start at a whole-unit U-value of 1.2 W/m²K for the system, and both have PAS 24 product routes. Anyone telling you one of these is the warmer or the more secure choice is selling a difference the published data does not show.

Whole-unit figures depend on the actual size, glass and configuration, so the number that ends up on your project is confirmed at quote rather than taken from this page. See how aluminium U-values work.

Weather performance, as tested

The two systems are tested at different sizes, so the classes are not directly comparable, but both are published. Casement: Class 3 (450 Pa) air permeability and Class 7A (300 Pa) watertightness at 2100 x 2100mm, and Class 4 (600 Pa) with E1050 (1050 Pa) at 1200 x 1500mm.

Tilt and turn: Class 4 (600 Pa) air permeability and Class 8A (450 Pa) watertightness at 1100 x 2300mm, and Class 4 with CE1200 (1200 Pa) at 1500 x 1600mm.

An exposed elevation is judged on these classes at the size you are actually fitting. Bring the exposure category at enquiry and the route can be confirmed against it. See air, water and wind classes explained.

How each one is used day to day

A tilt and turn opens inward in two positions: tilted at the top for secure background ventilation, or turned fully in for cleaning both faces from inside. That makes it the usual answer above ground-floor level and on any opening where an outward leaf would foul a walkway or a balcony.

A casement opens outward and gives the wider range of styles, including flush and hidden-vent options. It keeps the opening clear inside, which suits rooms where an inward leaf would hit a blind, a sill or furniture.

Common questions

Is tilt and turn warmer than casement?

No. Both systems publish a whole-unit U-value from 1.2 W/m²K. The figure on your project depends on size, glass and configuration and is confirmed at quote, not by the opening type.

Which takes the bigger window?

It depends which dimension you mean. Tilt and turn takes a wider leaf, to 1725mm against 1370mm. Casement goes taller, to 2400mm against 2300mm, and carries a heavier leaf at 180kg against 130kg.

Can I get PAS 24 on either?

Both systems have PAS 24 product routes. Which specific configurations carry the rating is confirmed at enquiry, so tell us the performance target when you send the opening.

Which is easier to clean upstairs?

Tilt and turn. Turned fully inward it lets both faces of the glass be cleaned from inside the room, which is why it is the usual choice above ground-floor level.
